By Hatab Nyang/Louise Jobe

Gunjur Police Station in the Kombo South District of the West Coast Region has resumed operations on the 18th of March 2020, after being driven away by a hostile and angry mob that attacked the Station to violently protest against the alleged shooting and killing of one of them by one Buba Drammeh of Berending.

According to the Alkalo of Gunjur, the Police fled for their lives and deserted their station to save their lives. He added that the people who were driven by anger, blamed the Police for negligence by not arresting Buba Drammeh well before he killed one of their own; that he told the Police that the people drove them because they were raged with anger by the deliberate killing of one of their own son who left behind nine children, and was also attending the University and working for the Brikama Area Council (BAC).

He said after the incident, they worked tirelessly for the Police to return to their Station to which the GPF agreed and they have since resumed operations from a new location. He said the Police will be at this new location temporarily until they have a permanent place to build a Police Station.

Ismaila Darboe, a brother to the Chief of Kombo South District explained to these reporters that the former place where the Police were stationed needs complete renovation; that this is why they were moved to a temporal new location.

When contacted to shed light on this development, Superintendent M. Sanyang of the Gunjur Police Station confirmed the story and said they have started operations on Saturday March 18th 2020; that some youth of Gunjur and Members of the village’s Council of elders attended the re-opening ceremony of their temporal new Police Station and referred the reporters to the GPF PRO for further details.

However when contacted by these reporters, Police PRO ASP Lamin Njie could not be reached for comments and were later told by Officers at the Banjul Police Headquarters, that the PRO was busy.
