The US avoided attacking ASSAD and be responsible for the political mess of leaving Syria without a government which could govern and thus bringing about another failed state as has happened in Libya.

On the other hand, Russia has jumped in to support Assad who cannot ever lead a unified and stable Syria. Hence Russia can never build a united front of Syrians against ISIS and is likely to utilise funds to build the Russian economy in a war which its ally can never win.

Hence, the way to build a united front of Syrians is for Assad to be replaced by a transition government which could unify the country and get the international support necessary to drive foreign forces out of Syria and then hold genuine multiparty elections after drafting and approving a Secular Democratic Republican Constitution at a referendum.
