IEC announces council by elections for 6 seats


The Independent Electoral Commission has announced in a press release that it will conduct by elections for six vacant council seats on 24 May 2017. The seats to be contested in the elections are for the following wards: Old Jeshwang and Tallinding Wards in the Kanifing Municipal Council, Bantanjang, Somita and Sukuta Wards in the Brikama Area Council and Galleh Ward in the Janjangbureh Council.

According to the release, this is necessitated by the resignation of the erstwhile councillors of the wards mentioned above who resigned to enable them contest in the National Assembly elections.

For the information of the reader section 90 of the constitution does not permit an “elected member of a local government authority” to contest a National Assembly seat.
