The team lost the opening tie against hosts Mali on Saturday but resuscitated their campaign to beat Guinea Conakry on 13-12 at the Mali Cultural Basketball lawn, a source close to the team camp divulges.
The squad’s win put them on brink of snatching gold hinging on outcome of their semi-final game which was being played as we went to press.
Gambia’s participation in this year’s competition sponsored by international Basketball Association means an end to the country’s thirty-seven-year absence from international basketball.
Coach Foday Singhateh and his charges were ranked T-94 prior to this tournament and last starred in an international Basketball championship in 1978 in the African Championship where they finished 9th.
