FIB-sponsored Super Nawettan: Banjul aiming to shoot down Gunjur in finals

By Sulayman Bah and AbdoulieFatty

Banjul will today seek to rock Gunjur’s boat when the two square at the Independence Stadium.fib-sponsored-super-nawettan-2

Sponsored by FIB, the clash is one promising to be a crowd-puller at the country’s 30,000 capacity seater pitch. Gunjur reached the final after jettisoning of last year’s runners-up Sukuta in a cracking semi-final post-match contest after both side drew one-all in regular time.

Sukuta raced to the driving seat but a resolute comeback had the Kombo South outfit nicking in an equalizing goal via the fib-sponsored-super-nawettanspot-kick before going ahead to pull off a wow factor on penalties.

Gunjur remain buoyed ahead of today’s 4:30 pm fixture as they plan to pull a major upset to snatch the title in their first time in the FIB sponsored Super Nawettan. However for that dream to see light of day, they will have to thrash Banjul who are arsenal ready  to shoot down the south side.

The build-up to the game has been impressive amid euphoria surrounding the make or break must-watch showdown.

The finalists have kitted by main sponsors FIB and urged to do clean battle in a Wednesday press briefing staged at the Bank’s headquarters.

Speaking in that meeting, FIB General Manager Pa Ousman Njie voiced delight over the institution’s association with the community-based championship.

‘We will continue to support such endeavours,’ he said. Chipping in, Super Nawettan Organising Committee’s chairman Ba S. Jabbie threw plaudits at the Bank for coming to the tourney’s aid as sponsors despite the noise, rivalry dogging the popular competition.

‘I will also like to urge you to open up branches at the Gunjur area as well’, he says.

Advising both sides whose representatives were present at the meeting, Jabbie said: ‘football is win and lose. In this case we are all winners. Is also good you accept outcome of the results.’

Commenting on the relevance of peace ahead of the showdown, Pa Modou Faal Super Nawettan organizing Committee’s SG said: ‘We would like the final to be played in peace as peace is what football is about’

‘I also want to thank FiB for their role in the growth of not only community football but for sponsoring a tournament that aids in talent development.’
